Cavities—holes in your teeth—are caused by acids in plaque that can dissolve your tooth enamel. Dental plaque forms as oral bacteria mix with food particles in sugary, starchy foods along with acid and saliva. This sticky film will adhere to enamel if not removed daily, eventually damaging the enamel and spreading to the dentin and pulp below.
You can help prevent cavities in your smile by implementing the following five strategies:
#1 Brush your teeth twice a day (at least) with a fluoridated toothpaste. This will help strengthen your enamel.
#2 Take the time to floss at least once a day. Floss between each tooth and along the gumline. Choose a flossing method you enjoy to encourage you to floss regularly. Dental wax, oral picks, floss threaders, and oral irrigators are all excellent choices.
#3 You can help remove residue and fight bacteria by rinsing with a fluoridated or antibacterial mouthwash. This will also discourage plaque buildup.
#4 Eating a nutritious diet is good for your smile and your body. Limiting sugar and starches involves eating balanced meals and avoiding candy, chips and sticky snacks feed bacteria in the mouth.
#5 Regular professional dental cleanings and oral exams allow us to remove plaque deposits to detect problems in their infancy. We may also recommend dental sealants on at-risk molars or fluoride treatments to remineralize and strengthen enamel. You can also drink tap water which has fluoride added to deter cavities.
